Freedom From Sin

Do you ever feel like you will never be able to break free from sin? Do you feel so attached to some sin that you really want to let go of because you know it's hurting God, but you just can't seem to do it? Do you decide ahead of time that you won't sin in this area ever again, but then every time temptation comes around you fail? Maybe it's just not possible for you to break away from this sin.

Correct! It's not possible for you to break away from your sin. You are powerless to do anything about it by yourself. Jesus told us in John 15:5 that we cannot do anything without him. Yet Christ is able to change us and set us free from sin. If we belong to Christ, we have already been set free from sin. Romans 6:6-7 says,"We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin." Winning freedom from a specific sin can be hard and take a while. Erin Davis put it this way: "Sometimes we experience immediate deliverance from the tug of war with a specific sin when we accept Christ. But sometimes, winning that war takes time and diligence." And Dannah Gresh and Nancy Leigh Demoss say it like this: "Anyone who is a true follower of Jesus Christ will begin to have victory over sin. Even the most addictive habits can be overcome through Christ. In some cases, that victory is immediate…However, you may have a genuine relationship with Jesus and still find yourself plagued by a sin that you keep giving in to again and again. God does not immediately deliver us from every sinful compulsion at the point of salvation…But as children of God, we have the power to overcome every sinful bondage and practice” (Lies Young Women Believe, 137).

So how can we get rid of sin?

1. First of all, have you been set free from the chains of sin by salvation through Christ?

2. Get rid of temptations! If your facebook or myspace or email causes you to sin, shut your accounts off. If your constantly sinning in a relationship, cut that out. If you find yourself watching wrong things on your TV, throw it away. (Well...I guess your family might not be too happy about that one :) )

3. Pray. The power of prayer has more effect than you think. Ask Christ to change your heart and actions.

4. Get in the Word! Study God's Word. If you feel tempted to sin, study the Bible.

5. Confess your sin!

Although breaking free from a sin is hard, it is so worth it to expierence true freedom. And you will be glorifying God with your life, and that should be our goal anyways :)
