Seven Names of Jesus

When we think about who Christ is, maybe we think of names like Lord, God, Savior, etc. But I want to talk about some different names for Jesus, more than just the ones we hear often. Of course, He is God and Savior, and those are very important names, but He's even so much more than that!

He is...

~Messiah: "the promised and expected deliverer of the Jewish people; an expected deliverer." (definition off dictionary.com) This name is one of my favorites. God promised that He would send a deliverer, and He did. Jesus the Messiah. Just think, even when Jesus was a baby He was the Messiah. He wasn't just a perfect baby. He was our promised deliverer. Matthew 1:16 says, "Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah."

~Emmanuel: God with us. That's what Emmanuel means. God is ever present. Isn't it amazing to know that the Creator of the universe will always be with us and be at our side? Isn't it also depressing to think that God is right there no matter what we do? I mean, He sees everything about us! But the good news is, He loves us anyways. "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." -Matthew 1:23

~Son of God: John 1:49 tells us, "Nathanael answered and saith unto him, 'Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.'" The Son of God. Wow. God sent His own, only son to be the Messiah for us. Christ left everything He had in Heaven to come to a filthy godless world and stoop to the level of man, just to die and save us. That just baffles me.

~Son of Man: I know I just said Jesus was the Son of God. How can He also be the Son of man? Jesus, when He came to this earth was fully God. Yet He was fully man too. Matthew 26:64- "Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." I can't fully comprehend how it's possible that He can be God's Son and the Son of man...but He is. Aren't we glad He came in human form? That means He walked the same world, He battled the same temptations (though He never lost), and experienced the same physical things.

~Great High Priest: We don't need someone to sacrifice for us so that we can be acceptable to God. Christ is the Great High Priest. He offered the ultimate sacrifice. We no longer need to go through a priest to get to God. We have access to the Father through His son. His son made us acceptable in His eyes. Hebrews 4:14- "Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession."

~Truth: John 14:6- "I am the way the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Jesus is truth, and everything He says and does is Truth. I like the way Dannah and Nancy put it in their book Lies Young Women Believe. (Yes, that book again ;) ) "Truth is agreement with the standard or original. The standard or original for our Truth is Jesus Christ. He is the prefect standard; He determines what is good and right and true. Jesus reveals His truth to us. He does this through His word.

~ Resurrection and the Life: "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.' (John 11:25) Jesus is the life. We are dead without Him. But we are able to have life through Him and Him alone. If He is our Savior, we are going to live for all of eternity with Him. I'm so glad that Jesus is my life!

So there are seven names of Jesus. They are some of my favorites! There are hundreds more! Check for several more names of Christ coming up next week. In the meantime, it's your turn! What are some names of Christ that you really love? Which ones mean a lot to you? This ones easy, girls. :) So get on it and start sharing! ;)
